Lyle Fire Department's very first fire truck, known as "Little Red", has recently undergone a comprehensive restoration thanks to an Oregon mechanic education program.

"Little Red" is a 1948 International KB-2 built in Portland, Oregon by the Howard Cooper Corporation.

The Dalles High School's automotive class devoted substantial time and effort across two school years to restore this iconic vehicle. Under knowledgeable adult supervision and guidance, the high school students rebuilt the engine, completed a total brake overhaul and refurbished the drive lights. "Little Red" is now operational and after more than 30 years in storage, it is the Lyle Fire Department's goal to showcase "Little Red" at local parades and other community events.

Purchased in 1953 from the Yakima Fire Department for $2,160.00, courtesy of donations from Lyle community members and donors in surrounding areas, "Little Red" was very beneficial upon it's arrival to the Lyle Fire Department and during its operational years. Until recently "Little Red" has sat for decades. Luckily this collaboration with The Dalles High School and the department started to be explored to meet mutual goals.

Reportedly a favorite project amongst the automotive students, the teacher, Taylor Alshiemer, shared that many students formed strong bonds with "Little Red". This project was a new endeavor for students as many had never seen a 1948 International KB-2 fire engine built by Portland's Howard Cooper Corporation.

After almost two years away from the Lyle Fire Department, "Little Red" returned to its home with excited firefighters awaiting its arrival.

Lyle Fire Department appreciates The Dalles High School automotive students and Mr. Alshiemer for their hard work restoring one of the Lyle Fire Department's most valued possessions.
