Fire Risk Reduction Learning Opportunities

Lyle is naturally a fire prone area with historic fires starting from lightening, volcanic eruptions and in more recent history, a variety of human causes, including prescribed burning from farmers and indigenous peoples over centuries.


Knowing this history, preparing for fire season and reducing fire risk is important.


Since Spring is a great time to reduce fire risk on your property, we are highlighting learning opportunities that can help landowners manage their fire risk.


March 7, 2026: Mt Adams PBA Pile Burning Workshop - Pile burning is an efficient and cost-effective way to dispose of forest fuels to reduce wildfire risk. Get tips on how to build piles that will burn effectively, ways to mitigate smoke impacts, and more. Learn more.


April 12, 2026: Mt Adams PBA Learn & Burn - A one-day, hands-on learning experience on a prescribed burn. This workshop is open to anyone - no qualifications, experience, or equipment required. Learn more.


April 29, 2026: Before Wildfire Strikes: Improving Wildfire Preparedness in Hood River - A free, family friendly program focused on how we can work together to reduce wildfire risk in and around Hood River. This will be an opportunity to learn about Hood River’s wildfire risk, explore strategies to increase resilience, as well as connect with local wildfire and natural resource organizations. April/May 2026: Lyle Tree/Brush Chipping - A variety of resources are available for landowners to chip tree branches and small trees from fire risk reduction activities. For landowners east of the Klickitat River, the Underwood Conservation District offers mobile chipping and a loaner chipper. The Lyle Fire Department with support from the Washington Department of Natural Resources, is offering a free mobile chipping opportunity to reduce fire risk and spread for those who live in the Lyle Fire District (space is limited - Contact Prevention@LyleFire.com).
